The Revolutionary Student Coordinating Committee is alarmed at the employment of Gen. David Petraeus. While the pay has dropped from $200K to $1 due to the controversy it does not mean we have won. We will not triumph until Petraeus is out,but this is only the beginning. His employment is not just about the economics, but also the political question—the content of education. Petraeus’s course will surely promote American benevolence in foreign policy [Imperialism] and the jingoism of building a better (American-dominated) world. RSCC aims to build a CUNY that is politically oriented to anti-imperialism and national liberation; this is not compatible with the employment of Petraeus.
Yet, we must view this within the larger context of the militarization of CUNY. ROTC is returning to CCNY; ICE has had events promoting itself in Queens College, along with the lockdown and heavy surveillance of Queens College; the spying of Muslim students was very recent; and the promotion of figures who aid or lead imperialism on the world scale are promoted and given a voice in CCNY – the like of Colin L. Powell, Secretary-General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Yaoni Sanchez, CIA backed and funded Cuban dissident. This is only a tip of the iceberg, because there are rumors of even more reactionary activity that we have yet to uncover.
The RSCC calls for a city-wide united front combining the power of the student body and student organizations; the faculty of progressive professors and adjuncts (the majority of CUNY faculty) and the progressive and radical community organizations who are interested in bettering the working class and oppressed-nationality communities.
Join us for a better CUNY, a better NYC and a better world!
