***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***
March and rally
When: Thursday October 24th, 12:30pm
Where: City College of New York administration building
Press Contact: Tafadar Sourov 646-331-1266,
Over the weekend, CUNY Public Safety officers raided the Morales-Shakur Community Center at the City College of New York, and removed all of the belongings. The next day, the entire building was placed under lockdown to keep concerned students and community members out, during which students were held against their will inside the building. In response to these procedures, students and community members worked together to organize a large demonstration Monday October 21st at noon, during which they occupied the rotunda of the North Academic Center for an hour.
Two days later and the administration has neglected to reach out to the students and community members who have legal rights to the space, to explain why their space was illegally seized and why they were not warned. The administrations official statement is that they need space for a career and development center, despite already having one on campus.
Student organizers from the Revolutionary Student Coordinating Committee (RSCC) believe that the seizure of the Morales-Shakur Community Center comes as revenge by the CUNY administration for the embarrassment they faced due to the publicity of the protests against former CIA director David Petraeus teaching in CUNY.
Although everyone is saddened by the loss of a space that ran services such as a farm share and a book exchange, the students and community members organizing for their community center have not lost their resolve. We are calling for another successful mobilization at the City College of New York, at 12:30pm on Thursday October 24. The organizers enjoy massive support, from city council persons, to community members, to nearly every Undergraduate Student Government in the CUNY system. All progressives in NYC are urged by the CUNY community to come and protest the repression of student organizing and community access to a public university.
