Palestinian activist Rasmea Odeh was found guilty of one count of Unlawful Procurement of Naturalization. In other words, she told the state that she has never been arrested despite being convicted by the Israeli government. This incident led to her arrest on October 22nd 2013 in the US based on a confession from Rasmea while she was being tortured by Israeli military officials. We condemn the guilty verdict against Rasmea, but we are not surprised at the extent this imperialist country will go to persecute those being oppressed by the Zionist state that it props up.
We call for self-determination for oppressed nations around the world that face domination by imperialism. Settler-colonial states such as the United States and Israel can only exist by oppressing other people such as the Palestinians, African Americans, First Nations, etc. In addition to this internationalist perspective, we must also condemn the patriarchal violence that comes with imperialism. As a result of their proactive stance in the fight for liberation, women such as Rasmea have been repeatedly attacked by the state in order to continue the status quo of imperialism and patriarchy.
What is being done to Rasmea is of concern for all oppressed people. The only thing Rasmea is guilty of is existing as an oppressed person. If her rights and citizenship can be taken away because her existence is proof of the crimes of Israel’s terroristic existence, then it can be done to all of us. The imperialist state is always ready to break its own rules to keep this white supremacist, patriarchal, capitalist society running- it will not hesitate to brand Rasmea Odeh guilty, just as it did not hesitate to assassinate Abdulrahman Al-Awlaki.
In the City University of New York (CUNY), SJP’s face much repression for trying to build international solidarity for Palestine. SJP at Brooklyn College has to admit guests at their events through metal detectors, and recently SJP at John Jay College was publicly denounced by school authorities after zionists on campus complained that their feelings were hurt following a Die In/Vigil in solidarity with Palestine. Currently CUNY serves to reproduce the oppression and subjugation of oppressed nationality communities in NYC, and we are fighting to liberate the university. In a CUNY that is controlled by the people, SJP’s and all other progressive organizations can build the movement without being impeded by reactionaries.
We call for all progressive, radical, and revolutionary students to stand in solidarity with Rasmea and struggle on behalf of oppressed people. Only through struggle can we bring down the criminal and anti-people regimes such as the US and Israeli governments. While we continue to hope for the best for Rasmea as she appeals her case, we will continue to organize to build solidarity for Palestinian liberation here in CUNY, and link it with the struggles of oppressed communities in NYC.
FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA , PALESTINE WILL BE FREE!
AN ATTACK ON RASMEA IS AN ATTACK ON US ALL!
