“Nothing is more anti-semitic than Zionism” – Lowkey, Long Live Palestine
CUNY City College of New York presents “A Happy Ending,” a play by Iddo Netanyahu, brother to the face of the settler-colonial, genocidal state, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It is “…a play that explores a Jewish family’s dilemma whether to stay or flee 1930s Berlin.” The play is a case of Zionists talking about the horrors of the Holocaust while ironically denying that they themselves are inflicting the same horrors on the Palestinian people. Nothing is more of an insult to the memories of those who were killed in the Holocaust than the genocidal occupation Israel carries out against Palestinians every day.
It is a continuous trend for CUNY to promote reactionary ideology in the university, such was when the Board of Trustees gave a teaching position to the former director of the CIA, General David Petraeus. Although students led heavy protests against it, which resulted in six students being violently arrested, CUNY did not change its mind about keeping war criminal Petraeus. In fact the administration made a point to strike a blow at the students in response by taking away the Morales-Shakur Community Center. CUNY has been increasingly pushing for militarization of its campuses by inviting the presence of ROTC, holding events for ICE police and even former IDF soldiers to spread imperialist ideology, as it actively suppresses progressive clubs like Students For Justice In Palestine, Students Without Borders, etc. And now it is treating the students to a hypocritical play by a Zionist reactionary who publicly says Iran is the biggest threat to Israel.
It is clear that CUNY is an Ideological State Apparatus of capitalism and imperialism, and will do its best to promote the ideas that legitimize these systems. Students for Justice in Palestine clubs face repression all throughout the university, as part of the ideological battle between Palestinian liberation and Israeli settler colonialism. At Brooklyn College SJP was subjected to repression in 2013, and the college’s funding was threatened by the City Council because SJP held an event about the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS). At John Jay College in 2014, SJP was accused of contributing to anti-semitism on campus by the college president after he received complaints from the Zionist club, Hillel, following a die-in by SJP to highlight the massacre of Palestinians over the summer. While this play might not be officially sponsored by the state of Israel, it is nonetheless part of the ideological battle Zionism is waging.
Zionists opportunistically use history to try to attain sympathy for a crime committed against Jewish people and in turn are committing that same crime against the Palestinians. The same way Jewish people suffered genocide under the Nazi Arian-supremacist regime, Palestinians are being exterminated under the settler colonial ideology of the Israeli state. Using the Holocaust promote Zionism is an insult to the memory of the Holocaust for genocide is genocide, no matter who commits it.
As revolutionaries it is our duty to fight against reactionary ideologies in our university. We will continue fighting reactionaries and their ideas until they are out of our campuses. CUNY must be liberated and transformed into a university where progressive and revolutionary ideas are reproduced!
Join the Revolutionary Student Coordinating Committee this Thursday, September 10th to protest the Zionist presence at CUNY City College.
