When: Tuesday, November 3rd, at 9 a.m.
Where: Federal Court House at 40 Street, Manhattan. Room 1703
For more than 25 years Ron McGuire has served the students of CUNY as a pro-bono lawyer, representing student activists and organizers in many cases against CUNY administration. The CUNY administration, wanting to preserve the status quo and clamp down on dissent, saw a ferocious adversary in Ron whose skills as a lawyers prevented administration from suspending, expelling, and even sending to jail many of these student organizers.
Ron defended RSCC comrades Taffy and Khalil when the CUNY administration suspended them and threw criminal charges against them for their organizing against the shutting down of the Morales-Shakur Community Center. The city was forced to drop the criminal charges and our comrades are free to continue organizing for the liberation of CUNY; all thanks to the brave advocacy of Ron McGuire.
However, those in power never stopped to seek the opportunity to make Ron pay for daring to challenge them. A court decision reduced by 93 percent the lawyer’s fee he was supposed to receive for defending College of Staten Island students on the freedom of speech case Hussain v. Springer. Ron was counting on those lawyer fees to be able to finance his retirement. Now, with his rent increasing and Ron not being able to find work because of his age and past history of advocacy for the CUNY students, he faces the possibility to end up homeless.
We must not abandon Ron McGuire as he faces the dirty tricks of the state. We must not leave our comrade alone after him being there with us for many years as CUNY tried to repress those of us who dreamed for a liberated CUNY. We must stand with Ron McGuire and show him our support in gratitude for his many years of service to the people of NYC.
Ron will be at the Second District Court to present an emergency motion to request permission for an oral argument for his appeal to the court decision to reduce his lawyer fees. The Revolutionary Student Coordinating Committee will stand in solidarity with him and we call on all students and organizers in the city to do the same.
Defend lawyer of the people Ron McGuire!
Liberate CUNY for the people!
